Sachsenenergie to Extract 16% of Dresden's District Heating from Elbe River by 2031
Sachsenenergie plans to deploy a 50 MW large heat pump on the Elbe River to supply 16% of Dresden's district heating by 2031. This initiative aims to enhance local energy independence and reduce reliance on fossil fuels while contributing to decarbonization efforts.

Sachsenenergie will utilize a 50 MW heat pump to extract thermal energy from the Elbe River, providing approximately 300 GWh of heat annually for up to 45,000 households in Dresden by 2031. The project, costing around €92 million, is expected to receive government subsidies covering one-third of the costs.
The facility will cool the river by about 3 degrees Celsius while ensuring a stable supply of district heating. This heat pump is part of a broader strategy to integrate decentralized energy sources and improve regional supply security amid geopolitical uncertainties. The project also includes an architectural design to blend with Dresden's industrial landscape.
