Saddle River Flood Management Study Reinitiated with Federal Grant
A reevaluation study for flood risk management in the lower Saddle River will commence this summer, backed by a $500,000 federal grant. The project aims to address longstanding flooding issues affecting multiple municipalities in Bergen County, NJ.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has secured a $500,000 federal grant for a reevaluation study of the lower Saddle River flood risk management project, set to begin this summer. This initiative, which will cost $3 million split with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, follows decades of flooding affecting towns such as Lodi, Garfield, and Paramus, with significant events recorded since 1968.
The study will last three years and may lead to channel improvements addressing insufficient capacity in the area. Historical flooding events, including those due to Hurricane Ida in 2021, have exacerbated the problem, impacting around 2,000 properties. If the authorized plan from 1986 is executed, it could protect against a 150-year flood event, although new developments have complicated previous proposals for flood reduction.
