Santa Cruz County Initiates Straw Bale Tiny Home Project to Combat Housing Crisis
Local organizations in Santa Cruz County are collaborating to establish a straw bale tiny home village to address housing shortages. This initiative utilizes sustainable building methods to create affordable housing options for very low-income residents.

A partnership between Just Places and People First aims to construct a straw bale tiny home village near Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Soquel, California. The project seeks to raise $300,000 through fundraisers, with completion anticipated within four to six months if funding is secured.
The homes will be LEED-certified and designed to provide stability for very low-income residents. Straw bales, a method originating in the 1800s, will be used for their carbon sequestration properties. This initiative is a response to the growing homelessness crisis in Santa Cruz County, where housing affordability has become increasingly challenging.
