Savon Voima has launched a new heat pump facility in Joensuu, which has been recognized as unique on a European scale. During winter, the facility utilizes waste and condensate heat from flue gas scrubbers, generating about 6 MW of additional thermal power for the district heating network.

In summer, it will leverage river water as its heat source, enabling heat production without combustion. The plant's trial operation commenced in late 2025, with approximately 300 hours of usage recorded.

The river water heating system has not yet been tested due to low temperatures. The facility was awarded the Heat Pump City of the Year title in Brussels in autumn 2025.
