Schuylkill County Residents Propose Data Center Moratorium Amid Infrastructure Concerns
Residents of Schuylkill County are advocating for a moratorium on data center developments due to environmental and infrastructure concerns. The county commissioners have acknowledged these issues but emphasize the financial benefits of such projects.

During a recent commissioners meeting, a Butler Township resident called for a statewide moratorium on data center development, citing environmental impacts and infrastructure strain. Concerns included the significant water usage of data centers and the potential impact on the power grid.
Commissioner Larry Padora highlighted a financial balancing act, suggesting that the addition of three data centers could defer tax increases for 8-10 years. He also mentioned the preference for locating data centers on reclaimed land rather than residential areas. Despite acknowledging public concerns, commissioners did not indicate plans to support the proposed moratorium, focusing instead on economic advantages.
