Scotland Prioritizes Renewables Over Nuclear Fusion and SMRs
Scotland's government has officially decided to focus on renewable energy, dismissing nuclear fusion and small modular reactors (SMRs) as unproven technologies. This strategic direction reflects a commitment to immediate, deployable energy solutions amidst the climate emergency.

The Scottish Government will not pursue nuclear fusion or small modular reactors (SMRs), deeming them unproven technologies. Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin emphasized the lack of commercial viability and uncertainties surrounding these technologies, particularly noting that the UK's prototype fusion plant is not expected to be operational until 2040.
The closure of the Torness nuclear power station by 2030 raises concerns over local economic impacts, including job losses and supply chain disruptions. The Nuclear Industry Association estimates Scotland is missing out on approximately 5,000 nuclear jobs due to the government's stance against new nuclear projects. The current focus will remain on renewable energy sources, which are already generating jobs and investment.
