Senegal Signs $300 Million Partnership for Solar Energy in Agriculture
In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural sustainability, Senegal's Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock has formalized a $300 million partnership with a joint venture led by the Gambian group, Cornerstone, and Dubai-based Hajib Al Shams Solar Energy. This collaboration aims to integrate solar-powered systems into farms, aquaculture sites, livestock operations, and agricultural processing facilities throughout the nation.
Operating under a build-operate-transfer model, this initiative ensures that ownership of the infrastructure will eventually transition to Senegalese farmers and private sector participants, empowering local stakeholders. Beyond the deployment of solar energy, the agreement encompasses comprehensive training for farmers, capacity building for technicians, and the promotion of bioenergy solutions such as biogas and biofertilizers. Additionally, it includes strategies for the monetization of carbon credits, which aim to bolster agricultural insurance and contribute to the establishment of a national agricultural fund.
Facilitated by BridgeKonekt, a global advisory firm, this partnership not only aligns with international best practices but also represents a vital investment in the future of Senegal's agricultural landscape, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable food production system.
