SFO Cargo Terminal Expansion Set for 2028 Completion with $300M Investment
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is investing over $300 million in a new cargo terminal to enhance capacity and efficiency by 2028. This development aims to position SFO as a principal cargo hub on the West Coast amid rising cargo volumes.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) plans to enhance its air cargo handling capacity with a $300 million investment aimed for completion in spring 2028. The new terminal will span 310,000 square feet, focusing on advanced automation, including automated storage and retrieval systems from Lödige Industries.
The project will feature three Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs) designed for efficient cargo transfer, enhancing throughput and reducing turnaround times. This expansion aligns with trends in North America where airports are modernizing cargo infrastructure in response to e-commerce growth. The automation will support scalability and digital connectivity, reflecting the industry's shift towards efficiency and higher shipment volumes.
