Siemens and Vulcan Energy Form Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Lithium in Europe
Siemens AG and Vulcan Energy have established a partnership to enhance lithium production in Europe through the Lionheart Project. This initiative aims for an annual output of 24,000 tons of lithium hydroxide monohydrate, supporting the production of 500,000 electric vehicle batteries.

Siemens AG and Vulcan Energy have formalized a partnership to develop the Lionheart Project in Germany's Upper Rhine Valley, dedicated to sustainable lithium extraction. The project anticipates an annual production capacity of 24,000 tons of lithium hydroxide monohydrate, supporting approximately 500,000 electric vehicle batteries.
Additionally, it will generate around 275 GWh of renewable electricity and 560 GWh of heat annually over three decades. Siemens will provide automation and digitalization technologies through 2035, enhancing the project's operational efficiency.
This collaboration aligns with the EU's Critical Raw Materials Act, emphasizing resource independence and cleaner energy transition. The initiative could significantly impact Europe's lithium supply chain and electric mobility landscape.
