Sierra Gorda Mine Advances Brownfield Engineering for Low-Grade Copper in Chile
Sierra Gorda's operational enhancements exemplify effective brownfield engineering, yielding a copper production of 154,559 tonnes in 2024. The mine's strategic focus on infrastructure optimization highlights a critical trend in copper supply amid increasing project challenges.

Sierra Gorda, a joint venture between KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. and South32, achieved 154,559 tonnes of copper production in 2024, emphasizing brownfield optimization over new builds. The operation, which commenced commercial production in 2015, has successfully increased its capacity to process approximately 49 million tonnes per annum by enhancing systems and implementing equipment upgrades.
Strategic partnerships for water and renewable energy supply bolster its operational framework, reducing long-term risks. The proposed expansion to 58 Mtpa reflects a calculated approach to growth utilizing existing infrastructure. Future exploration efforts indicate significant potential for mine-life extension, underscoring the importance of optimizing low-grade resources in a challenging copper market.
