Smithfield Foods has initiated plans for a $1.3 billion processing facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The new plant will replace the existing downtown facility, which has operated for over 100 years, and will be built in Foundation Park.

The project is contingent on regulatory approvals and board consent. Site work is expected to commence in spring 2026, with a groundbreaking in early 2027 and production beginning by late 2028. The facility will feature advanced automation, improving efficiency in pork processing. The investment supports local agriculture and aims to create jobs.
