South Africa Mining Production Decreases 4% in June 2026
June 2026 saw a 4% year-on-year decrease in South Africa's mining production, with platinum group metals contributing significantly to the decline. The sector's contraction raises concerns for GDP growth, following a 2.7% decrease in the second quarter compared to the first quarter.

In June 2026, South Africa's mining production fell 4% year-on-year, exacerbating a trend following a 5.1% decline in May. The largest negative contributor was platinum group metals (PGMs), which dropped 8.4%, impacting overall production by -2.4 percentage points.
Coal and iron ore also saw declines of 6.6% and 10.2%, contributing -1.7 and -1.5 percentage points respectively. Seasonally adjusted mining production did increase 0.3% month-on-month in June after a 5.2% drop in May.
Despite production declines, mineral sales rose 27.2% year-on-year, largely driven by gold, chromium ore, and PGMs. The ongoing drops in production raise risks for economic growth, particularly with the manufacturing sector also facing contraction.
