South Africa to Host World Wetlands Day 2026 with Focus on Peatland Management and Traditional Knowledge
World Wetlands Day 2026 will take place on February 2, focusing on peatland management in South Africa. The Water Research Commission (WRC) and Agricultural Research Council (ARC) are collaborating to improve identification and management of peatland fires, which threaten water security.
Peatlands, vital for regulating streamflow and carbon storage, face increased degradation due to climate change and poor land use. The event will include a field excursion at Colbyn peatland, featuring peat-fire suppression demonstrations and a workshop to present a decision tree management tool for peatland fires. Guidelines for peatland rehabilitation are expected by November 2026.
