South Australia Battery Systems Generate AU$324,000 Amid AU$20,300/MWh Price Cap
South Australia's battery storage systems collectively captured AU$324,000 as prices reached the AU$20,300/MWh cap. This incident highlights the volatility in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the strategic decisions made by battery operators during extreme price events.

In a recent price cap event, South Australia witnessed battery storage systems generating AU$324,000 as prices hit AU$20,300/MWh. The Mannum battery energy storage system (BESS) led with AU$151,740, followed by AGL's Torrens Island BESS at AU$107,230.
Neoen's Hornsdale Power Reserve contributed AU$70,810, while Dalrymple North BESS added AU$16,180. Contrarily, several systems remained idle, producing minimal revenue despite capacity availability. Notably, two BESS, Lake Bonney and Templers, charged instead of discharging, resulting in a combined revenue loss of AU$49,570.
This decision may relate to maintaining charge levels for frequency control obligations or pre-existing bids. South Australia continues to experience extreme pricing events, tied to high renewable energy integration and limited generation buffers.
