South Korea Resumes Operations of Gori-2 Nuclear Power Plant After Three Years
The Gori-2 nuclear power plant in South Korea has resumed operations following a three-year shutdown for modernization. This development highlights potential pathways for Germany to reactivate its own decommissioned nuclear facilities.

South Korea's Gori-2 reactor, a 640-MW pressurized water reactor operated by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company, restarted in early April after being offline since April 2023. The reactor underwent safety inspections and upgrades during its shutdown, extending its operational license to 2033.
The South Korean government is facing energy shortages, exacerbated by the Strait of Hormuz blockade, prompting calls for fuel conservation. Additionally, the nation plans to expand its nuclear capacity, with two new reactors expected online by 2038. In Germany, experts indicate that reactivating some of its decommissioned reactors is feasible, potentially providing energy for decades more.
