South Korean Navy Scraps Chamsuri 325 Patrol Boat After 30 Years of Service
The South Korean Navy has scrapped the Chamsuri 325 patrol boat, which served for over 30 years, selling it for 38 million won. The vessel participated in significant battles, including the First Battle of Yeonpyeong in 1999. The Navy justified its decision by stating restoration costs would exceed 1 billion won, and similar monuments already exist. Critics argue the decision reflects a lack of historical awareness, while contrasting it with the UK's investment in preserving historic ships.

The South Korean Navy has sold the Chamsuri 325 patrol boat for approximately 38 million won following its decommissioning in 2022. The vessel, which defended the Northern Limit Line for over three decades, played key roles in the First Battle of Yeonpyeong and the 2009 Battle of Daecheong.
The Navy stated that restoration costs exceeding 1 billion won were unjustifiable, especially with existing monuments commemorating similar historical events. Critics have raised concerns about the Navy's historical awareness and the implications of scrapping a vessel with significant legacy. In contrast, the UK allocates 42 million pounds for the preservation of HMS Victory, reflecting a commitment to historical legacy.
