Spain's new S-80 Plus-class submarines aim to enhance the Navy's underwater combat abilities, with the lead vessel, Isaac Peral, launched on May 7, 2021, and commissioned on November 30, 2023. The fleet includes the launched Narciso Monturiol and two additional submarines expected to be operational by 2028 and 2029.
The S-80s, featuring AIP technology, will replace the aging Galerna-class submarines, which are over 40 years old. The program has faced significant delays since its inception in 2003 due to design flaws and budget issues. The submarines are being constructed by Navantia in Cartagena.
