St. Martinville City Council Authorizes Canal Cleaning Agreement
The St. Martinville City Council has authorized Mayor Jason Willis to enter an agreement for cleaning Willis Canal, pending legal approval. The project addresses water flow issues caused by debris, with liability concerns influencing the parish's participation.

The St. Martinville City Council has approved Mayor Jason Willis to negotiate an intergovernmental agreement for the cleaning of Willis Canal, which is obstructed by trees and branches. The parish government is willing to undertake the work but requires assurance regarding liability for potential damages or injuries, contingent upon the city’s insurance coverage.
City Attorney Allan Durand is to confirm whether the city's liability insurer can waive exclusions related to the agreement. Without this waiver, the city may have to hire a contractor, which previously cost $200,000 for similar work on Durand Canal.
Additionally, the council has discussed replacing a collapsed valve at the Evangeline substation, with costs shared with St. Martin Parish. The mayor highlighted ongoing summer programs, including basketball and cultural camps, with registrations currently open.
