St. Mary Parish Council Allocates $500,000 for Bayou Vista Drainage Improvements

CARBON CAPTURE

The St. Mary Parish Council approved a $500,000 allocation for drainage improvements at the Bertrand-Vining Pump Station in Bayou Vista. The funding, derived from the Wards 5 & 8 sales tax, is expected to be available in the fall due to the new budget year.

The estimated cost for the pump station upgrade has increased to $1.3 million from an earlier estimate of $800,000. The council also unanimously passed a resolution opposing the use of eminent domain for carbon capture projects, citing environmental concerns and impacts on landowners.

The drainage district recently won $1.1 million in a lawsuit related to the pump station's design issues. Additionally, the council honored a 106-year-old resident on her birthday and respected the memory of a former mayor of Morgan City.
