Stanford Researchers Awarded $27.2 Million for AI Micro-Robot Development
Stanford University has secured an up to $27.2 million grant from ARPA-H to develop the M3bot, an AI-driven micro-robot aimed at treating blood clots and aneurysms. This funding could enhance endovascular procedures for stroke patients, potentially allowing timely treatments at local hospitals.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has awarded Stanford University up to $27.2 million to develop the AI-powered M3bot, a micro-robot capable of navigating the bloodstream to treat clots. The M3bot can travel at over 55 centimeters per second, utilizing its spinning motion to both propel itself and mechanically compress blood clots, reducing their volume by over 95% without generating harmful fragments.
This innovative approach could streamline complex procedures into a single intervention, significantly improving patient outcomes and reducing treatment times, especially for those living far from specialized care. The project integrates robotics, AI, and medical imaging, aiming to revolutionize endovascular treatment and accessibility.
