Steady Energy Constructs Electric-Powered Test Reactor for District Heating in Helsinki

FLOW CONTROL

Steady Energy is constructing a test reactor in central Helsinki, designed as a full-scale prototype of its LDR-50 district heating reactor, operating without nuclear fuel. An electric resistor will replace the nuclear reaction for heat generation.

The project aims to showcase a passive safety system, which allows heat to be diverted to an external water tank without an external pump. The test reactor will be built at a former coal power plant owned by Helen and is expected to be finished by early 2027. Additionally, decisions regarding the site for the actual underground nuclear reactor are anticipated around the same time, with construction permits to be sought by 2028 and the first reactor planned for operation in the early 2030s.
