STMicroelectronics to Deploy Over 100 Humanoid Robots in European Legacy Fabs for Efficiency
STMicroelectronics plans to deploy more than 100 humanoid robots in its legacy semiconductor fabrication plants across Europe to enhance efficiency and automate routine tasks. The initiative follows the company's announcement to retrain workers for specialized roles amid a workforce reduction of 5,000 in 2024. The robots will handle wafer operations in older facilities, which face competition from highly automated fabs in China and other regions, as modernization funding under the European Chips Act is limited.

STMicroelectronics is set to implement over 100 humanoid robots in its legacy fabs in Europe to improve operational efficiency. These robots will perform routine and physically demanding tasks, such as handling silicon wafers.
This move comes as STMicro plans to retrain workers for specialized roles and has announced a reduction of 5,000 employees in 2024. The introduction of automation aims to enhance productivity in older plants that struggle against newer, highly automated fabs in China. The European Chips Act provides limited funding for modernization, focusing instead on new projects.
