Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project to Become India's Largest with 2,000 MW Output by December 2026
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, led by NHPC, aims to generate 2,000 MW by December 2026, becoming India's largest hydroelectric project. Chief Minister Khandu highlighted the project's role in the 'Viksit Bharat' vision and its potential for river tourism. The initiative, which began in 2001, has faced setbacks but is now gaining momentum, with machinery operational and additional projects planned across the state. A master plan for sustainable tourism development will also be prepared, focusing on eco-friendly infrastructure and community involvement.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, backed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), is expected to produce 2,000 MW by December 2026, making it India's largest hydroelectric facility. Chief Minister Khandu announced this at Dollungmukh, where he outlined development plans aligned with national goals.
Despite previous protests, the project has seen renewed progress since its inception in 2001. The project features a 45 km reservoir stretch and is part of broader efforts to enhance tourism and clean energy in Arunachal Pradesh. A state government initiative will also develop sustainable tourism infrastructure, including luxury resorts and water sports, to boost local economies and attract visitors.
