Sumter County and Kimley-Horn Initiate Flood Mitigation Assessment for County Road 519A
Sumter County is partnering with Kimley-Horn and Associates to conduct a Flood Mitigation Assessment on County Road 519A, following flooding incidents in 2024 caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The assessment, starting in December 2025 and concluding in May 2026, aims to improve safety and living conditions by evaluating stormwater management options, including retention basins and a pump station. A cost-benefit analysis will be presented to the County Commissioners.

Sumter County has partnered with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. to conduct a Flood Mitigation Assessment on County Road 519A in response to flooding issues in Coleman, exacerbated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. The assessment began in December 2025 and is scheduled for completion in May 2026.
It will involve a drainage assessment of the Little Jones Creek/Wildwood watershed and a geotechnical study to explore stormwater design alternatives. Recommendations will include options such as stormwater retention basins and a pump station to prevent flooding. A significant water pumping operation in November 2024 pumped nearly 1.9 million gallons of water following an emergency declaration by the governor.
