Surrey Council Considers $5.8M Sewer Heat Recovery Contract
Surrey council is set to vote on a $5.8 million contract with SHARC Energy for sewer heat recovery units. This initiative aims to enhance the city's low-carbon energy capabilities and reduce reliance on natural gas.
Surrey council plans to vote on a contract worth $5,785,259.76 for SHARC Energy to supply three district energy sewer heat recovery units. If approved, the contract's spending limit will be capped at $6,075,000, with expected unit delivery within 32 weeks and installation by Fall 2028.
The new facility will extract thermal energy from the Metro Vancouver sewer main, addressing over 50% of downtown's heating demand. This transition to sewer heat recovery aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions and decrease dependence on natural gas-fired boilers used in the existing District Energy Utility, which currently serves 49 buildings.
