Sweden Implements New Work Permit Rules and Fuel Tax Cuts in May 2026
Sweden will introduce new work permit regulations and reduce fuel taxes starting May 1, 2026. The changes aim to enhance employment opportunities for foreign workers and alleviate financial pressures from rising fuel costs.

Starting May 1, 2026, Sweden will lower fuel taxes on petrol and diesel, expecting a decrease of approximately 1 krona on petrol and 40 öre on diesel at the pump. This measure, part of a broader budget amendment, will cost the state 1.5 billion kronor and is set to last until September 30.
Additionally, new work permit regulations will eliminate the need for holders to reapply when changing employers within the first two years. The three-month job loss deadline will also be extended to six months to support workers.
Legislative changes regarding deportations of young adults are anticipated, with a proposal to provide a safety clause for those affected. Potential impacts include increased compliance with EU directives and improved labor market stability. The implementation of AI surveillance by police starting May 1 raises concerns about personal privacy amid ongoing debates on technology use.
