SwRI Upgrades Subsurface Safety Valve Facilities for Carbon Capture and Storage Testing
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has enhanced its subsurface safety valve (SSSV) testing facilities to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications. The upgrades, completed in August 2024, aim to improve safety and efficiency for clients amid rising demand for CCS-related testing. SwRI participated in a joint industry project to standardize testing procedures and contributed to API's Annex P for CCS environments. The facility modifications streamline workflows and enhance testing capabilities for extreme temperature conditions.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has upgraded its subsurface safety valve (SSSV) facilities to accommodate carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications. This enhancement, completed in August 2024, aims to meet rising demand for CCS testing and improve safety and efficiency for clients.
SwRI participated in a joint industry project to establish standardized testing procedures for SSSVs in CCS environments and contributed to API's Annex P for CCS requirements, released in December 2025. Facility modifications allow for streamlined testing setup, reducing labor costs, while ensuring reliable performance under extreme cold conditions. SwRI is also exploring additional testing opportunities to reinforce its position as a leader in safety valve testing.
