Tamil Nadu Develops Roadmap to Quantify Urban Forestry Climate Benefits
Tamil Nadu's urban forestry initiatives are set to adopt a standardized methodology for measuring climate benefits, including carbon sequestration and flood mitigation. The roadmap, created under the Indo-German Support Project for Climate Action in India, aims to assess the climate co-benefits of tree planting. From 2022-2026, 14.16 crore seedlings are projected to be planted over 1.28 lakh hectares, potentially sequestering 2-3 lakh tonnes of CO2 annually. The methodology will also address challenges in land availability and maintenance.

Tamil Nadu is implementing a new roadmap to standardize the measurement of climate benefits from urban forestry, as part of the Indo-German Support Project for Climate Action in India. The framework will quantify the climate co-benefits, such as carbon sequestration, urban cooling, and biodiversity enhancement.
From 2022 to 2026, 14.16 crore seedlings are expected to be planted, covering 1.28 lakh hectares and sequestering an estimated 2-3 lakh tonnes of CO2 annually. The methodology will evaluate both mitigation and adaptation benefits, focusing on biomass accumulation and field measurements.
