Tamil Nadu Forest Department to Establish Biochar Facility in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve
CARBON CAPTURE
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department plans to set up a biochar manufacturing facility in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve to address invasive plant species and generate revenue. The project, costing ₹8.50 crore, will involve local tribal groups and rural communities in harvesting invasive plants, which will be converted into biochar through pyrolysis technology.
The facility aims to process 7,000 to 10,000 tonnes of biomass annually, producing a stable carbon-rich product that improves soil fertility and contributes to carbon sequestration. The biochar can be monetized via carbon credit markets, providing a financial incentive for emission management.
