Tanzania's Mining Sector Growth and Strategic Mineral Focus
Tanzania's mining sector contributed 10.3% to GDP in 2025, up from 7.8% in 2024, driven by rising gold prices and mineral exports. The country aims to diversify beyond gold, capitalizing on its reserves of critical minerals like graphite and rare earth elements.

In 2025, Tanzania's mining industry saw GDP contribution rise to 10.3%, with mineral exports hitting $5.4 billion, a 31% increase from 2024. Mining-related revenue surged to an estimated 1.4 trillion shillings ($530 million), up from 624.6 billion shillings ($237 million) in 2021/22, as gold exports rose to $4.7 billion due to a 66% increase in gold prices.
The Nyanzaga gold project, under construction since mid-2024, is expected to produce 250,000 ounces annually starting in early 2027. Tanzania's potential includes 36 to 45 million ounces of gold reserves and significant deposits of critical minerals, such as 18 million tonnes of graphite. Diversification is critical to mitigate reliance on fluctuating gold prices and external economic factors.
