Terradot Acquires Eion to Expand Carbon Removal Technologies through Enhanced Rock Weathering
Terradot, a U.S. startup backed by Google, has acquired Eion to diversify and expand its carbon removal capabilities. Both companies focus on enhanced rock weathering (ERW), a method of using crushed rocks to capture CO₂ from the atmosphere. The merger aims to leverage over 400,000 tons of carbon removal credits, including a significant contract with Frontier. Despite the scientific validity of ERW, challenges remain in scalability and energy demands. The carbon credit market is experiencing investment slowdowns, making consolidation necessary for survival.

Terradot has acquired Eion to enhance its carbon removal efforts through enhanced rock weathering (ERW), which involves crushing rocks to capture CO₂. The merger positions the combined entity to utilize over 400,000 tons of carbon removal credits, including a 170,000-ton contract with Frontier, which invested $1 billion in carbon removal technologies.
While ERW is scientifically supported, scalability remains uncertain, with energy-intensive extraction processes posing environmental concerns. The carbon credit market is slowing, with many companies struggling to deliver on their promises, making mergers like this essential for growth.
