In a strategic move towards sustainable farming, Tesco has inaugurated its "low-carbon concept farm" in Lincolnshire, marking the beginning of a multi-year initiative focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. This program, launched in January 2023, involves partnerships with key suppliers, including potato supplier Branston, as well as collaborators in the production of peas, wheat, and broccoli.

Farmers have commenced testing innovative agricultural techniques at Langrick Farm, near Boston, where Branston is employing lower-carbon methods across 20 acres. The current crop yield is projected to be approximately 520 tonnes of potatoes, which could translate to around 260,000 two-kilogram packs destined for Tesco's shelves later this year.

The initiative encompasses a diverse range of technological trials, such as robotic tilling, low-nitrogen crop varieties, alternative fuels, biomass heating, pollinator cover crops, and anaerobic digesters. Notable technologies in use include R-Leaf, which converts nitrogen pollutants into plant feed, Ccm Technologies' low-carbon fertilizer, and Omnia, a data mapping system for farms.

Tesco is financially supporting these farms through supplier contracts, with a vision to mitigate risks associated with green investments by determining the economic viability of various innovations. Tesco's UK CEO, Ashwin Prasad, emphasized the retailer's responsibility in fostering a resilient food economy and providing better outcomes for farming communities.

The trials are set against the backdrop of the UKás 2030 climate targets and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events affecting agriculture. While Tesco has yet to formalize a strategy for incentivizing suppliers to adopt successful technologies, it aims to share insights with its sustainable farming groups for broader application across the industry.
