Thailand Cabinet Endorses Carbon Capture and Storage Guidelines for Emission Reduction by 2050
The Thai Cabinet has approved guidelines for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to support greenhouse gas emission reductions, aligning with the country's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Department of Climate Change and Environment will coordinate efforts across government agencies to develop necessary laws and policies, while the Ministry of Energy will explore carbon dioxide sequestration potential in the upper Gulf of Thailand. If deemed feasible, infrastructure for CCS could begin development in 2034, targeting emissions reductions in challenging sectors and fostering sustainable economic growth.

The Thai Cabinet has approved guidelines from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to enhance greenhouse gas emission reductions via Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology. This aligns with Thailand's aim for net-zero emissions by 2050 and its Nationally Determined Contribution targets.
The Cabinet designated the Department of Climate Change and Environment as the coordinating agency to integrate efforts across government bodies for developing necessary laws and policies for the CCS initiative. The Department of Mineral Fuels, Ministry of Energy, will oversee the study of carbon dioxide sequestration potential in geological formations in the upper Gulf of Thailand under Thailand-Japan cooperation. If feasibility is confirmed, infrastructure development for carbon capture and storage may commence from 2034, aiding emissions reductions in hard-to-abate sectors and promoting low-carbon industries and sustainable economic growth.
