The Evolving Landscape of Natural Gas and Carbon Capture in Data Center Energy Supply

CARBON CAPTURE

In the past year, U.S. gas producers have turned their focus toward the burgeoning data center market, recognizing an opportunity to integrate electricity generation with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies. While hyperscale data center operators have expressed a desire for carbon-free energy, the anticipated synergy between natural gas and CCS has faced significant challenges, resulting in varied strategies among industry players.

Supermajors like Exxon Mobil and Chevron have adopted contrasting approaches. Exxon has committed to supplying gas exclusively to power plants equipped with CCS, bolstered by its $4.9 billion acquisition of Denbury and its position as a leader in the U.S.

CCS market. The company has also secured a major CO2 offshore storage lease and has initiated its first third-party CCS project, aiming for an annual CO2 offtake of nearly 10 million metric tons.

Conversely, Chevron remains flexible, suggesting a "gas-first, CCS-later" strategy to accommodate market demands, including the immediate needs of data centers for reliable power, regardless of emissions profile. This reflects a broader acceptance of gas-fired power even in contexts where emissions reduction is not immediate.

In a notable shift, NET Power, backed by Occidental Petroleum, has recalibrated its ambitious Project Permian, which initially aimed for near-zero emissions through innovative technology. Following substantial cost overrunsãestimates soared to $1.7-$2 billion and project timelines were extended to 2029áNET Power now plans to deploy conventional natural gas turbines first, with CCS integration to follow. This phased approach aims to meet the urgent energy demands of data centers while addressing economic viability concerns.

This evolving dynamic underscores the complexities of balancing immediate energy needs with long-term sustainability goals in the face of fluctuating market conditions. As the data center boom continues, the strategies adopted by these gas producers will be critical in shaping the future of energy generation and emissions reduction in the sector.
