Three Mile Island to Restart Amid Rising AI Power Needs and Carbon-Free Demand
Constellation Energy plans to restart Three Mile Island Unit 1 in 2024, driven by Microsoft’s long-term power purchase agreement. This project highlights the increasing energy demands from AI and tech sectors, reshaping U.S. energy dynamics significantly.
Three Mile Island Unit 1, rebranded as Crane Clean Energy Center, is set for a restart in September 2024, following a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft. The project, backed by a $1 billion federal loan, will restore 835 MW of carbon-free capacity, sufficient to power approximately 800,000 homes, addressing the growing electricity demand from AI and data centers.
Since its shutdown in 2019, the plant's revival reflects a broader trend of increased reliance on nuclear energy amidst retiring coal and gas plants. The U.S. currently has 96 commercial reactors with a total capacity of about 98.4 GW, and plans for future expansions include 23.4 GWe of new nuclear generation by 2039. The TMI restart is poised to enhance grid reliability and stimulate economic growth in Pennsylvania through job creation and tax revenue.
