Townsville Initiates Major Saltmarsh Restoration along Ross River
Townsville City Council is executing a $1.03 million saltmarsh restoration project covering 64 hectares along the Ross River. This initiative aims to enhance water quality, support local ecosystems, and combat environmental degradation in Northern Australia.

The Townsville's Living Coastlines project, funded by the Australian Government's Reef Coastal Restoration Program, encompasses restoration efforts over 64 hectares between Abbott Street and Ross River. The project envisions planting nearly 1,000 trees, shrubs, and grasses to mitigate erosion and improve water quality.
Collaboration includes local First Nations groups and James Cook University, which has established 144 trial restoration plots for research on sediment stabilization and vegetation recovery. Safety measures, including basalt boulder barriers, aim to prevent illegal vehicle access and dumping. The project's completion will support critical habitats and contribute to carbon sequestration efforts, offering a sustainable framework for future coastal restoration initiatives in tropical Australia.
