Toxic Substance Leak at Antwerp-Bruges Triggers Large-Scale Evacuation
A toxic substance leak from the MSC Mia Summer II at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has led to the hospitalization of 155 individuals. The incident has caused a complete operational shutdown at the MPET terminal and the Kieldrecht Lock, with significant disruptions expected for shipping activities.

A leak of hydrogen fluoride from the MSC Mia Summer II occurred during cargo operations at the MPET terminal in the Deurganck Dock, resulting in the hospitalization of 155 individuals. Of these, 127 sustained minor injuries and have been discharged, while 28 remain hospitalized with more severe symptoms.
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has suspended operations at both the MPET terminal and the DP World Antwerp Gateway facility. Emergency services activated the Medical Intervention Plan, leading to a large-scale evacuation.
As of 08:30, the evaporation of hydrofluoric acid had decreased, and specialized teams are preparing to safely remove the leaking container. The suspension of shipping traffic and operations could lead to delays in cargo handling and inland transport, impacting European shipping logistics significantly.
