Tunis Medina Shop Promotes Upcycling and Circular Economy Initiatives
The Medina Store in Tunis, launched by Tunisie Recyclage, focuses on upcycling waste into useful products to foster a circular economy. With backing from the Canadian Local Initiatives Fund, the project aims to reduce waste and promote sustainable consumption in the community.
The Medina Store opened in mid-April in Tunis as part of an initiative by Tunisie Recyclage to transform waste into valuable products. This project supports around 200 families and numerous local merchants in efforts to reduce plastic waste and enhance recycling practices.
It highlights the need for improved legislation to encourage recycling, especially of economically unviable materials. Currently, household waste in Tunisia is composed of 70% organic matter and only 5% is non-recyclable. The initiative connects waste collection with creative artisans, aiming to make the Medina a hub for sustainable craftsmanship and economic development, while promoting a zero-waste culture.
