UAF Receives $325K for AI Project in Rural Alaska Power Grids
The University of Alaska Fairbanks has secured $325,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop AI solutions for rural power systems. This project aims to enhance energy resilience and efficiency in isolated communities across Alaska.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) has been awarded $325,000 by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the AURORA-AI project, with total funding of $725,000. Collaborating with the Cordova Electric Cooperative, Colorado State University, and the National Laboratory of the Rockies, UAF will create AI models to optimize electric systems in rural Alaska.
These tools aim to forecast demand, reduce diesel fuel usage, and enhance resilience in communities lacking larger grid connections. Phase One of the project will commence on October 1 and last nine months, focusing on research before potentially advancing to a $7 million Phase Two. The integration of modular data centers into microgrids is also planned, with cooling solutions utilizing local hydroelectric resources.
