UChicago and IonQ Partner to Establish IonQ Center for Engineering and Science with Quantum Research Funding

QUANTUM COMPUTING

The University of Chicago and IonQ have revived a previously stalled project to create the IonQ Center for Engineering and Science, supported by IonQ's funding. Announced in November 2025, this center will house the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, featuring a quantum computer and quantum network that connects to the University, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory.

This initiative marks the first instance of a university campus hosting both a quantum computer and a quantum network. The center will enhance the Chicago Quantum Exchange's ecosystem and is expected to support over 140 research and technology projects.

Building design is set for completion by 2026, with construction anticipated to last until 2030. IonQ's investment complements Illinois’ $175 million commitment to quantum research at UChicago, emphasizing collaboration in immunoengineering and materials science.
