Uganda's Kijani Forestry Launches Carbon Credit Initiative for Farmers by 2026
Kijani Forestry Ltd has launched a carbon credit initiative in Uganda, incentivizing farmers to plant trees under the National Climate Change Policy, with the goal of generating significant income by 2026. By mid-2024, over 30,000 households had planted more than 10 million trees, addressing severe deforestation and promoting biodiversity through the restoration of indigenous species. The initiative aims to enhance local livelihoods while combating environmental degradation.

Uganda has launched the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) to enhance climate change response. Kijani Forestry Ltd is implementing a model that incentivizes farmers to plant trees, with the potential for significant income from carbon credits by 2026.
Farmers like Jennifer Oyella, who allocated six acres for tree planting, receive annual survival incentives and can expect earnings to triple by 2026. The model involves planting fast-maturing tree species and guarantees farmers' income from charcoal, timber, and carbon credits.
By mid-2024, over 30,000 households had planted more than 10 million trees. The initiative addresses Uganda's severe deforestation issue, with forest cover dwindling to just seven percent. Kijani's approach includes restoring indigenous tree species to enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon, aiming to reverse environmental degradation and create jobs for local communities.
