UK Chooses Rolls-Royce for Small Modular Reactor Development
The UK has selected Rolls-Royce SMR to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), marking a potential revival of the nuclear sector. This initiative aims to create jobs, enhance energy security, and meet growing electricity demands, particularly from data centers and industrial applications.

The UK has selected Rolls-Royce SMR as the preferred bidder to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), pending government approvals. Traditional nuclear plants typically deliver 1 GW, while SMRs will range from 30 MW to 300 MW, utilizing modular construction for reduced build times.
The International Energy Agency forecasts plans for 25 GW of SMR capacity to supply the data center sector globally, with initial projects anticipated by the end of the decade. Various companies, including Amazon and Microsoft, are investing in SMRs to support their operations.
SMRs offer flexibility for applications such as combined heat and power and hydrogen production, which could enhance community acceptance and reduce carbon footprints. The revival of the UK nuclear industry may also provide a framework for addressing energy security and climate goals in other countries.
