UK Energy Minister Visits VPI's Immingham Plant for £1.5bn Carbon Capture Initiative
Energy Minister Michael Shanks visited VPI's Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant to discuss its £1.5bn carbon capture investment. The Humber Zero programme aims to retrofit carbon capture technology on two units, capturing 3.3 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The project is set to create 1,500 construction jobs and secure planning consent, contributing to the UK’s clean energy goals. The Viking CCS initiative is expected to attract £13bn investment and support 20,000 jobs in the Humber region.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks toured VPI's Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant, which is investing £1.5bn in carbon capture technology through the Humber Zero programme. This initiative aims to retrofit two of the plant's generating units, capturing 3.3 million tonnes of CO2 per year, thus making the Viking CCS transport and storage network viable.
The project will create approximately 1,500 jobs during construction and additional permanent roles post-operation. Planning consent and environmental permits have been secured, and the Viking CCS initiative is projected to bring £13bn investment and 20,000 jobs to the Humber area.
