UK Government Releases Final Reports on Carbon Removal Technologies from Innovation Programme

CARBON CAPTUREDIRECT AIR & OCEAN CAPTURE

The UK government has published the final reports from Phase Two of its Direct Air Capture and Greenhouse Gas Removal Innovation Programme, highlighting the performance of various carbon removal technologies. The programme supported over a dozen pilot projects led by energy companies, startups, and research consortia.

Key findings include Cambridge Carbon Capture's project on CO2 capture and mineralisation, and Equinor's ENCORE Phase Two focusing on liquid-based capture. Despite reported technical advancements, challenges such as cost, energy intensity, and scalability persist.

Biomass carbon capture projects like Evero's Ince showcased integration with gasification, while SeaCURE and Reverse Coal explored alternative carbon removal methods. The reports emphasize the necessity of carbon removal in the UK climate strategy to offset emissions, particularly from aviation and agriculture. The initiative, launched in 2021 with a £54 million investment, aims to foster a greenhouse gas removal industry in the UK.
