UK Paper Mill Implements Biogenic Carbon Capture Pilot with WEPA Group
A pilot carbon capture project at a Welsh paper mill aims to reduce biogenic CO2 emissions by converting them into biochar. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts in the UK paper sector to enhance sustainability and reduce fossil fuel dependence.

A carbon capture system has been installed at a WEPA Group-operated paper mill in Wales, UK, to reduce biogenic CO2 emissions. This six-month pilot, using technology from Nellie Technologies, captures emissions from industrial processes before converting them to biochar for agricultural use.
The UK paper industry has achieved a 70% reduction in fossil CO2 emissions since 1990, now accounting for 6% of national industrial energy consumption. Other initiatives include the £5.4m Flue2Chem project, producing chemicals from captured flue gas CO2, and CO280's projects to expand carbon capture networks. The increasing focus on carbon reduction in this sector may influence future investments and regulatory developments.
