Unauthorized Radiological Material Found at Former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard
A contractor for the U.S. Navy has identified unauthorized radiological material at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, complicating ongoing cleanup efforts at this Superfund site. Regulatory agencies were informed of the incident, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the adequacy of the cleanup process.

On April 8, a contractor for the U.S. Navy discovered unauthorized radiological material in a secure building at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. The site, operational from 1945 to 1974, is currently undergoing cleanup due to past contamination from radioactive materials.
The Navy indicated that the material was likely placed by a former subcontractor without proper licensing. This incident has raised concerns among local environmental groups about the thoroughness of the cleanup, particularly following accusations against a prior contractor for falsifying data.
Regulatory agencies, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, were notified by April 10, and the Navy is coordinating disposal efforts. The community will receive updates at the Hunters Point Shipyard Community Advisory Committee meeting on June 15.
