Union Government Commits to Protect Kollam Marine Ecosystem from Mining Impacts
Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh assured in Lok Sabha that stringent legal frameworks are in place to protect the marine ecosystem of Kollam from coastal mining. The government is committed to environmental conservation and has sanctioned ₹1,418.51 crore for various projects under PMMSY to support Kerala's fishermen and boost biodiversity. This includes funding for deep-sea vessels, artificial reefs, and alternative livelihood options. Infrastructure upgrades for the fisheries sector were also outlined.

The Union government is committed to protecting the marine ecosystem of Kollam from the adverse effects of coastal mining, according to Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh. He stated that stringent legal frameworks are in place to ensure environmental conservation.
A development package of ₹1,418.51 crore has been approved for Kerala under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which includes financial support for deep-sea fishing vessels, artificial reefs, and bivalve cultivation units. The plan also includes infrastructure upgrades for Kerala's fisheries sector, such as modernizing fishing harbors and establishing cold storage facilities. Additionally, 1,71,033 livelihood support packages have been approved for fishers during the annual fishing ban.
