Urgent CAP Negotiations Called for by ICOS Amidst Minister Heydon's EU Presidency
Minister Martin Heydon is urged to prioritize urgent CAP negotiations as farmers express growing concerns over funding cuts and regulatory impacts. Key issues include the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism's effect on fertilizer prices and necessary reviews of existing directives.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, is being urged to accelerate negotiations regarding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Edward Carr, president of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS), highlighted critical issues impacting farmers, particularly the proposed funding cuts for the post-2027 CAP.
Carr emphasized the need for Minister Heydon to advocate for food security at the upcoming EU leaders' summit in Dublin. He also pointed out the unresolved implications of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on fertilizer prices and called for a comprehensive review of the Nitrates Directive and related legislation. Furthermore, Carr noted the importance of enhancing women's roles in agriculture, coinciding with the UN's designation of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer.
