U.S. DOE Announces $69 Million for E-Waste Processing Technologies
The U.S. Department of Energy is offering up to $69 million to enhance critical minerals recovery from e-waste. This initiative addresses the significant loss of critical minerals, emphasizing the need for innovative processing technologies to secure domestic supply chains.

The U.S. Department of Energy has released a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) of $69 million aimed at developing processing technologies for critical minerals and materials (CMMs). Currently, only about 2% of CMMs in e-waste are recovered domestically, with approximately 44% exported and 54% sent to landfills.
This funding initiative reframes e-waste as a valuable resource, crucial for expanding domestic production capacity without new mining. It addresses upstream design issues that lead to downstream material losses, advocating for designs that facilitate recovery and recycling. The initiative invites collaboration from industry stakeholders to advance scalable recovery technologies.
