U.S. Navy Contracts $418 Million for USS Enterprise Dismantlement
The U.S. Navy has awarded a $418.5 million contract to NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services for the dismantling of the USS Enterprise, expected to be completed by September 2030 in Mobile, Alabama. This project serves as a pivotal case study for the future dismantlement of Nimitz-class carriers, potentially influencing cost and safety protocols for similar operations.

The U.S. Navy has contracted NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services for the dismantling of the USS Enterprise at a cost of $418.5 million, a reduction from an earlier bid of $536.7 million. The dismantlement will take place in Mobile, Alabama, with completion anticipated by September 2030.
Originally commissioned in 1961, the Enterprise was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and was decommissioned in 2012. The Navy plans to recycle ordinary steel and dispose of hazardous materials through licensed facilities.
This operation will inform the future dismantlement of Nimitz-class carriers, which will require similar processes. Lessons learned will be critical as the Navy faces the retirement of additional nuclear reactors.
